Need Wallstreet CD burner

I need a CD burner that would work with a Wallstreet.  I would like to
run it off of Jaguar - have a firewire card, could get a USB card.
Using it with 9.2 would be okay if necessary.

Would appreciate any information, if there is anyone who has purchased
and used a CD burner with a Wallstreet.

TIA,
Diana

Diana-

Whatever burner you find that can connect to the Wallstreet using USB, FireWire
or SCSI, the burner program in either OS X or 9.2.2, either will or will not
recognize it.  If you have the Roxio Toast program, it has a larger library of
burners.  They used to have compatibility lists on their web site, but may no
longer support that since the company was sold.

I've used two SCSI burners (HP and Yamaha) with Toast and OS 9.  If you go the
SCSI route, be sure to use a terminater on both ends of the cable since
Wallstreet doesn't have an internal termination.  I understand OS X has some
issues with SCSI, but I haven't tried it on the Wallstreet.

OS X does not support SCSI on the Wallstreet full stop. I used a HP
SCSI M820e under OS 9 and Toast. Under OS X I got an Adaptec Firewire
cardbus card and attached a Smartdrive Firwire CD Writer (16x8x32
IIRC) which was supported under Finder, iTunes and Toast.

Did you need a terminator (or two) to use that drive??

I don't have it to hand, but I believe it was self terminating. I can
only remember having to put a terminator on a scanner.

Thanks - I have one of those M820e units in the closet and, I tried it on a
Wallstreet a while back, but the Wallstreet didn't see an external drive at
all. I didn't have Toast on the machine, and I suspect the drive may not be
in the best possible shap, but now I'll try again.

Edward-

I think the M820e is the one I used.  It was the portable HP CD Writer supplied
with a SCSI PCMCIA adapter for use with Windows laptops.  I never got it to
work on any Windows machines I tried it with!

I had a termination at each end of the SCSI cable, as well as the necessary
SCSI adapters to match the PowerBook and the CD Writer's small SCSI-2
connector.

There was a problem with the CD Writer's SCSI operation.  It seems that it had
to be turned on during the PB's boot process.  If it was turned on first, it
wasn't recognized.  It had to be turned on after the boot process started, but
before the PB examined the SCSI bus, or the drive wouldn't mount.

It is possible that yours had the same booting problem.  It was just
coincidence that I discovered it.  Over a year or two, I successfully used that
drive on both the PB and a Beige G3 Mini Tower.  I used Toast Deluxe updated to
version 4.1.3.  (I still have that copy of Toast.  It seems to run in Classic
mode but it doesn't recognize the burner that came with a new G5 machine.)

I take it you did download the driver needed to operate the writer
under 2000/XP? I think the driver on the diskette supplied was only
for Win98. Could be wrong, although I did remember having to download
an updated driver to get my PC laptop to see the writer.
Alternatively, since the writer had a standard mini-scsi interface,
you could have ditched the HP PC Card and used a standard Adaptec
instead.

Correct. I should have mentioned this. I used a standard HD30 scsi
cable, but I still had to turn the writer on and off a few times
before Toast would see it. This was after booting and not recommended
for scsi, but I do not remember this ever causing a crash or damage to
either PB or writer.

I have an old La Cie SCSI CD burner that works with Toast under 9.2
with a Wallstreet. If you searched hard, you could probably find
someone who has one of the internal cd burners that were created for th
eWallstreet.
