There are also some letters (same site) wrt Fastmac.com Pismo upgrades.
Moore seemed very pleased with his Daystar upgrade and his correspondents spoke very highly of the Fastmac one. I understand that, while the Daystar upgrade requires that the Pismo be sent to Daystar, the Fastmac one just requires that the CPU card be sent in.

It seems the G3/900 has some overheat problems ..... while you can spare some energy with the G4 .... some programs definitely need a G4 like iDVD .... Keep contact please to share what you decide but I'm pretty sure I will bought the G4 ....

I'm going for the G4-550 as I think it will run cooler and give me almost the same speed as the G3-900 and faster speed in certain programs in OSX, I'm still a BIG fan of OS9.22 though!
Abbott - 06 Jun 2004 02:43 GMT I'd suggest you think about which apps you're going to run. If I was going to upgrade my Pismo, I'd probably lean toward the G3-900. Reason: most of what I do is FileMaker Pro, MS Office X, and Internet apps. I know FMP doesn't benefit from AltaVec...but it loves MHz. I'm also pretty sure that for what I do, Office won't benefit from AltaVec, but it loves MHz.
I also use Photoshop, but most of the time I'm using it on my QuickSilver. Heavy Photoshop or similar AltaVec-loving apps would have driven me to the G4 instead.
That's IF I was going to upgrade my Pismo. The new Al PB's convinced me to forego the upgrade and just buy a new system. Reasons: 1. My Pismo's display is getting old and a bit faint. 2. the new systems are about perfect for everything I do: everything about them is faster, plus the machine's a pound lighter.
My wife gets the Pismo (upgraded over the years to 1 GB RAM, a CDRW, bigger drive, and AirPort). She'll be happy, as she's migrating from an upgraded Wallstreet.

Yes, but Daystar has a cheap pismo screen replace thing, and the ability to hold 2 batteries, 2 USB 2 Firewire, great Airport reception has me hooked on my Pismo

> and the ability to hold 2 batteries, I don't get why this is so significant. On an AlBook at least, you can change batteries while in sleep, so swapping from one to the other is really no big deal. Plus I'd imagine sticking two heavy-metal chemistry sets into the front of your computer rather than one is only going to make it heavier.
> 2 USB 2 Firewire, Likewise on the AlBook. And it's USB 2 rather than 1.1
> great Airport reception And on the AlBook. It's better than my old Linux laptop, and better than the various Windows ones my friends have. I hear the TiBook wasn't so great, but the AlBook has the problem fixed.
> has me hooked on my Pismo I can perfectly understand staying with the Pismo if 1) it's "good enough" or 2) the AlBook would cost too much, but I wouldn't consider it the better machine.

For those in the US, it's $199 for the LCD and $75 labor.

Furthermore there'd be no shipment costs.. only trick might be to get one of those LCDs here in europe.. let's see.

I am considering an uprgrade, too, but I am torn between g3-900 and g4-550.

Apps open faster. Even the startup sequence is faster, and I only see that screen about once a month. My battery is still the same as it used to be.
I was also afraid that the G3 900 would put out some serious heat. My G4 550 is the same relative heat level as the original processor. I only hear the cooling fan come on when I leave the lappy sitting on a bed. This thing rocks!
My wife just got a new 1.5GHz Powerbook, and she asked me if I wanted to borrow hers. I couln't leave my zippy little Pismo behind for even a day, so I had to turn her down.

My 1ghz tibook nneded to go to the shop the other day, and I was using my pismo which has 1gb ram and a 5400 rpm 60gb hdd.

I recently inherited my wife's old Pismo (400 MHz) when she got a new 12" 1.33 G4. I figured I'd see about making it a decent mobile platform for me for a while. So I found a pretty good replacement battery (holds a 3.5 hour charge, got it for $60) and replaced the old 10 GB, 4200 RPM drive with a Toshiba drive at 60 GB, 5400 RPM and 16 MB of cache.
Even with the same old 400 MHz G3 and the same old 320 MB of RAM, this sucker feels almost as fast as my G4/667 desktop with a gig of RAM.
That hard drive made an *unbelievable* difference.
