Well, it seems that this group has become the (perhaps temporary) home
for iPod problems. They are quite portable, but techincally, they ain't
Macs.
Anyway my friend has a screwed up iPod which is only a couple of months
old and on warranty. He is living in a house under construction, and
when all the construction struff is going, the voltage can drop really
low. I once clocked it at 87 when a 5 hp compressor was going, and I
think this is what screw it up.
Anyway, the iPod system won't boot. He download the newest system
upgrade on his G4 (4-28), and when he tries to upgrade his iPod system,
he just gets the eternal beachball of death.
It occurs to me that since this is an **upgrade**, the upgrade might
need a functioning existing system to operate on and that is his
immediate problem.
Anyone have any ideas short of sending the sucker back to Apple?
TIA

The upgrade tool also has a restore button. Did your friend try that?

Standard output is like your butt. Everyone has one. When using a bathroom,
they all default to going into a toilet. However, a person can redirect his
"standard output" to somewhere else, if he so chooses. - Jeremy Nixon

Thanks for the reply, Gregory. I just installed the 4/28 upgrade
myself, and paid special attention to the procedure because of my
friend's problem. It appeared to me that during the initial
installation I did not have the option to Restore but only to upgrade.
Is this correct? If it is, and as my friend gets the beachball of death
trying to upgrade, your idea might not be viable.
Am I missing something?
TIA

Not as I recall, but I installed it the day it came out and haven't
looked at it since. I'm about 99.44% sure that every iPod updater I've
seen from Apple has included a restore button, though.
