The DVD/CD drive in my tiPB 400 died and a replacement from apple service
centre here in Australia
is around $700!!!  Anyone know of an alternative source or have a PB they
have
canabilised and want to get rid of the optical drive from?  Otherwise I
guess an external firewire DVD-R drive is one option but not as portable.

Cheers

Nigel

Ebay? might be possible with more generic PC laptop drive if you know
what type is needed. It has to be IDE of course, but beyond that is it
slimline (almost certainly almost all laptop drives are), is it slot
loading or a tray? etc.

The URL above is a US ebay auction, but some US seller are willing to
ship outside the US, and similar items may be available at the .au Ebay
website. Also the page has useful info about the manufacturer and model
of drive you need to look for.
