I have already replaced the motherboard to no effect, and just finished
replacing the entire lid/display unit, but still have no video.  My
backlight works, and I reset the Power Manager (I know it's not called that,
but I can't remember what it IS called) with
shift/control/option/command/delete while pressing and holding the interrupt
button in back, but no change.  I have *tried* resetting the PRAM with
option/command/P/R but all that happens is the PB seems to go to sleep (no
chime, screen goes dark and "sleep" indicator light on front of lid comes
on.)  It seems to boot and shut down just fine, there's just no video.  What
am I not doing?  Anyone have any ideas?  Please, someone help me.  I am at
my wit's end with this turkey.  I have written an entire kid's book (65K
words) and was ready to query my next target when the video when out.  Now I
can't get anything off of it until I can see what's on it again.  Fix this
and I will be yours forever.

TIA

On some desktop models from the same era (Powermac 6100 IIRC) this was
frequently caused by a dead PRAM battery.

From apple powerbook 5300 repair pdf (pretty sure when they say backup
battery they mean the PRAM battery, not the main battery that powers the
computer when unplugged from AC):

> If sleep LED is continually on, backup battery power has
> been interrupted. Restart computer by holding down reset
> actuator 10-20 seconds. If computer doesn’t restart, repeat
> 3–4 times.

If there is any chance the PRAM battery might charge, leave computer
plugged in about 48 hours, that should supply the PRAM battery with
power to recharge. Otherwise it may be dead, or there may be something
even more serious wrong. Is the power adapter and/or main battery
definitely good? Search Ebay for PRAM battery replacement?

If all attempts to turn it on fail, you may be able to copy your info
out two ways:

1) SCSI disk mode - connecting the powerbook to a desktop mac with a
special SCSI cable (HD-30 male to DB-25 male with disk mode switch built
in I think).

2) pull internal IDE hard disk out, attach to 2.5 inch to 3.5 inch
adapter, connect to newer IDE desktop mac or PC with MacDrive (to read
Mac format disk)
