Thanks for the reply, Andrew.
What happens to the warranty after repair?
Do I get an extension, say 3 months to cover the repair, just an
extension for the period without machine, or if repair not completed
before warranty expires, charged for the repair?

There may be a warranty on the repair itself (maybe 30 days or so?) but
I'd be surprised if they would extend the warranty of the machine. I don't
think that they could charge you for the repair if the warranty expires
while they have it, though. To be honest, I haven't read my warranty all
that thoroughly.
My reasoning for recommending Applecare is that, reading this group, it
seems that people who have a failure in a portable tend to experience that
same failure over and over again.
