Any point getting Outlook 2001 if I don't have Exchange?

Pardon me if this sounds like a dumb question.

I have an iMac that runs on Mac OS 9.0.  I read a review for Outlook 2001 in
the online version of MacWorld Magazine (http://www.macworld.com).  The
writer of the review made a remark indicating that I would have to have
Microsoft Exchange Server if I wanted to use Outlook 2001.

Do I understand that correctly?  Does this mean I cannot simply download
Outlook 2001 and use it as a stand-alone Internet e-mail client (like its
"little brother", Outlook Express)?

I am asking this question because I was thinking of downloading Microsoft
Outlook 2001.  But if I cannot use it in any way without MS Exchange Server,
then I guess there isn't any point in me downloading it, is there?

At any rate, thanks in advance for answering my question! :)

That is correct. Mac Outlook is for Exchange only. It is not capable of
accessing non-Exchange accounts.

Microsoft Outlook 2001

Microsoft® Outlook 2001 for Mac is for Mac users on OS 8.6-9.2 or OS X
(10.2.x and earlier), who need to collaborate with Windows users in an
Exchange server environment. Outlook 2001 requires connectivity to an
Exchange server. It cannot be configured to send or receive mail from an
Internet e-mail source.
