Outlook 2001 with Tiger

Can I use (download) Outlook 2001 with Tiger?  I have a new mac Mini
and don't know much yet.... I have Word/Excel and Powerpoint (purchased
at Apple store)...

Hi Scott!

Outlook 2001 will run in Classic mode (using Mac OS 9), which Tiger
supports.

If you have Word, Excel and PowerPoint you may also have Entourage.
Entourage from Office 2004 supports Exchange connections.

I have a new PowerBook G4 which came pre-installed with Tiger.  I went
ahead and installed the OS 9.2 support from the setup disk and
downloaded a new install of Outlook 2001.  But when I attempt to
install Outlook I get the error message "Microsoft Outlook cannot write
information needed to complete installation".

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?

Hi Tim!

Your problem sounds like one that was introduced with Panther when it
was first released. Outlook 2001 users who had upgraded from Jaguar to
Panther all of a sudden couldn't install Outlook 2001 and use it.

No definitive solution was ever found that I know of but the workaround
was to simply put the Outlook 2001 folder on another disk apart from the
startup disk. You could also put it on a disk image if you didn't have a
second disk and have the disk image automatically mount at login.

I just purchased 14 Mac minis with 10.4 Tiger and came across this problem
as well.  The good news is I've discovered a fix easier than mounted
volumes, etc.  I installed Outlook into the user's Applications folder - not
the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder.

/Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Applications/Microsoft Outlook 2001

Go into the Outlook Files folder within Microsoft Outlook 2001 folder

/Macintosh HD/Users/<username>/Applications/Microsoft Outlook 2001/Outlook
Files

Run the Outlook Settings app and create the profile - it should be
successful.  Then go into the profile itself and access the Delivery tab.
It should ask you to authenticate.

After going through that process (and two hours of messing with BSD
permissions), I was successfully able to log into my Exchange 2000 server.

That's a great idea and seems to support the theory that this whole
problem is permissions based!

What happens if you install in the /Users/Shared folder instead so that
every user who logs in can access it?

I've the same problem: Can't install Outlook 2001 on my new PowerBook
However Outlook 2001 runs smootly on my old PB running Tiger 10.4.2.
Tiger on the old PB was installed by upgrading from 10.3.9 and didn't
need to install Outlook 2001.

It went wrong with the new preinstalled tiger & Classic.
Maybe this expierence can help the real knowledgeables

I first thought it was a Tiger issue but I have found posts that talk about
10.3 also with the same problem.  I  then thought it was G5 poroblem but your
new PB is still a G$.  What are the similarites?

Hi T. Sepper

I have the same Problem.
I try your workaround and it works, I can open the Calendar and the
Inbox.
But I can't open the Global Adressbook and sending E-Mails doesn't
work.
And with the login is also something strange, I must insert the
password
twice, it opens two loginmasks.
I you have another solution, please let me now.

We're also having this problem on our Tiger image we just created. It's
very annoying that there seems no logical way to fix it. Any other
ideas out there besides rebuilding our image from scratch and hoping
that works?

We are ALSO having the same problem!  Sounds like it's quite an issue.  Is
there a fix for this?

The following is a post that was sent to me on another newsgroup.   I do not
have access to a Mac with Tiger at this moment.  Can anyone try the
recomendation?

Hi,

Thanks for your update and the screenshot.

I have performed extensive research on this issue, for further t-shooting,
please check the following points:

1. After discussing this issue with several other senior Mac Office support
professionals, I was told that the classic mode is not a good choice for
Outlook 2001. As you know, Outlook 2001 was designed for old Mac OS and the
classic mode is just something like a workaround. We may encountered
certain unexpected issues under this mode. In this way, we can try
rebooting the Mac to OS 9 and test the issue again.

2. Enlarge Memory
a. How much memory is allocated to the program? I suggest not less than
30,000KB for the troubleshooting. Please check and increase it if necessary.
b. Go to Apple | Control Panel | Memory.
c. In the Memory dialog, click to check on the Virtual Memory option.
d. Close the Memory dialog and try again to test whether the problem
persists.

By the way, does this issue occur to all clients or just certain ones? What
is the Exchange version on your side?
