Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel

I follow the update steps, download the update, agree to terms, then installer asks to select a volume to install the update, I only have 1 volume....

I click on my drive and a red exclamation mark and note sez "You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.9 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume.?"

ms offcie for mac 2008 is installed on this drive, license activated, however I only installed word, excel & powerpoint following the custom install procedures?

any help?

any help?

It might be easier to do a reinstall.

When the updates fail, it's usually a result of something a user has done to
modify their system.

Dos and Don'ts for a good install

diane,

thanks for the help, but each update requires a fresh install?
so far, i have installed ms office for mac 2008 4 times, each time
I ask to install updates I get the same message as above "You cannot install Office 2008 12.1.9 Update on this volume. A version of the software required to install this update was not found on this volume?"

furthermore, I have noticed that earlier updates (prior to 12.1.9) have not been installed, nor has auto updater prompted for these installs?

I'm glad ms thinks that doing a fresh install is easier than making their products work, I certainly don't!

certainly ms has maid it possible for mac os to remember my license string (I know this from my multiple installs) after deleting ms office for a re-install, but won't let update identify and run without a re-install?

ms software reminds me why I switched to mac, now off to find an office replacement!

thanks for playing!

If you have a newer DVD of Office, it only requires the 12.1.9 updater. It's
a combo and only requires 12.1.0 be installed. Newer DVDs come with 12.1.0
installed.

OK, so I may have a newer install DVD, however I don't think an acceptable work around to software updates is re-install?

I think there have been way too many problems with the Office 2008 updaters.
I also think users should follow directions. Fingers can be pointed in both
directions with the issues involving the Office 2008 updaters. Personally,
supporting this has been a nightmare. We volunteer our time and it's nothing
but extra work for us.

I'm a new Mac owner....I, too, installed Office 2008 for Mac....I just did a regular install...I followed all recommended install instructions ...NO custom installations!

Is there ANYTHING I can do to fix this situation...It does not sound as if the re-install actually fixes anything....I've just been canceling the installation!

Please advise....C

diane, in this case this user did follow directions, with this software company (MS) and others.

funny, I can update software from other manufacturers without being accused of finger pointing, yet somehow after spending money for a product that won't update without a re-install I am accused of not following directions & finger pointing by a volunteer?

need I tell you where and how to get off?

if your volunteering for this the second eternal mystery beyond why MS has an update scheme that requires re-install, is why are you exposing yourself to this nightmare for nothing?

having been away from MS for almost 10 years I am reminded why I left, and why I won't venture back for this product or any others in this lifetime!

thanks, but no thanks!

OK, hold it!

Diane and others like her are not part of Microsoft and they're not here
getting paid.

You're upset. We get it. Don't take it out here. She has tried helping
you but no one offering *free* assistance needs your attitude.

Diane, not Microsoft, has posted a lot of this information based on the
collective experiences here in these newsgroups and elsewhere. When she
says you should examine what *you* might have done then she's not
accusing you of anything. She's merely saying that, from experience,
she's learned folks have often been the cause of their own problems.

In this case, you never responded as to whether or not you read her
article and have possibly used an application such as Monolingual to
remove languages. That's an innocent thing for users to do to save disk
space but it breaks the Microsoft updaters. Still, it's the user who
caused the problem.

Diane is not here to defend Microsoft and she is not here to say what's
"acceptable" and "unacceptable". She provides answers and solutions that
will work for most people. She's making no guarantees that you'll like
them. She's only telling you *from experience* what has worked for others.

bill, diane, et al.....

I have no idea who you are, whom you work for, or why your defending a failed product here.

I came here for help, I got accused of finger pointing, and turned it back to diane, and now I'll turn it back to you!

my "attitude" is a direct result of being told I didn't install this product correctly, can you guess where you can hide that premise?

my "attitude" is also a direct result of the categorization of this software as failed because it requires re-installation as finger pointing! sorry I upset your boss, the one that doesn't pay you, but that is the definition of failed.

I don't know how to categorize someone whom works/volunteers for a failed software company? could you explain why it is you have such alliance to a company that doesn't pay you?

funny how you turned that one around bill.

yes, I did the install correctly, you feel OK now?

still can't get an update without a full install? just something I want to do, keep in contact with my install disk, yeah right!

I'm guessing you monolingual comment means that microsoft doesn't believe it's a burden for a user to do a full clean install of the operating OS in order for their products to work properly? guess what drove most users to mac.....

I'm surprised everyday at what people will and won't do, in this case not for money.

sorry bill, diane, your most recent remark "most people" is yet another veiled attempt to suggest that me, the user is doing something to make this great piece of software fail? this is what lead to "attitude" as you call it. face it, the update portion of this software is failed. perhaps you can't be that objective?

I didn't accuse you of anything. You asked

<quote>
OK, so I may have a newer install DVD, however I don't think an acceptable
work around to software updates is re-install?

do you?
</quote>

I gave you a general reply not directed at you in particular. I said "users"
not you.

My reply:

I think there have been way too many problems with the Office 2008 updaters.
I also think users should follow directions. Fingers can be pointed in both

OK, so now your backing off the finger pointing comment?
I'm a user, you said users? I took it to mean me, the user.

so do you think a re-install is appropriate for a software update?

funny, I came here as a "user" now after I replied to your quips it was not directed at me? doublespeak???

did so before I found this place for support...

didn't know that a re-install and a few insults were part of the software update program.

so far, the problem still exists, although we have moved beyond insulting the user, the one whom pays for this product, and somehow the next person who asks about this design feature will no doubt get the same finger pointing comments.

sorry I rocked your tree about supporting for free a failed product update scheme. I'd find a more fruitful calling if it were me.

I, too, can't get the 12.1.9 update to install. This is not the fault of any "tinkering" I've done to my system. The problem rests with the update, itself, the MS AutoUpdate or Office 2008, in general. Long story short MICROSOFT OFFICE 2008 = FAIL. Period.

yeah, we'd hate to have a bunch of people with the same problem that the appointed solution is to remove/re-install the software...

that's not pretty, a solution that is falied...

but hey, that's why most people left MS and went Mac in the first place!

I don't have to put up with your insults. I'm a volunteer and have no

your offering a FAILED solution to a FALIED product feature?

it doesn't matter if your paid or not, but offering a FAILED solution to a FAILED product feature is insane, so *Plonk!* ME!

I *RASPBERRY!* you back, as I PAID for software that is FAILED in updating itself, a re-install is required!

I will replay as often as the unpaid volunteers do here, as most of us PAID to buy something that doesn't work...

so for the moment I will share your "emperor has no clothes" view!

enjoy that, now back to *RASPBERRY!*

tell your software engineers to "FIX THE PRODUCT" and quit pointing people to FAILED solutions on a FAILED product!
