A friend called and she has a new iMac and has Office 2008 installed.
She was concerned about upgrading and I advised he to download
Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1 (12.1.0)

Now I am concerned that she has not installed the 12.0.1 update. My
question is ....
Does the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac Service Pack 1 (12.1.0) contain
the 12.0.1 updates or do they need to be installed before SP1?

SP1 is a combo updater. Make sure she restarts and hold down shift key to
disable any startup items from loading. Install from the CD, Restart, apply
SP1 update, Restart. Details here:

Thanks..... I thought it was a combo but wanted to be sure before having
her run the updater. I suggested she download the combo rather than
messing with the MS auto updater. I don't trust the MAU for major
updates. She already has Office 2008 installed and working so we will
skip the reinstall from the CD
I had no problems with SP1 combo updater.
