Version: 2004
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther)
Processor: Power PC

my wife has a LOT of word documents and powerpoint presentations that she created on her computer using office for mac 2004. now whenever she tries to open one of them, the program starts up then terminates itself. if she opens the program first then tries to open the file, it attempts to open then terminates the program. if you open the program then create a new file it terminates when you try to save it.

it was working one day and then it wasn't.

Hmm....let's work on Word first--try the standard troubleshooting
measure listed here:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html

I'd start with repairing permissions, as here:
http://word.mvps.org/mac/DiskIssues.html

Other common culprits for Word are a corrupted Normal template or
damaged Preferences file--but since there is an issue with PPT as well,
I'd start with the system fixes.

Interesting.
First of all, after looking at the version of Mac you are running, you are OK there. Please look at the requirements below for Office 2004 I have included for you. The first one is for Standard, Student and Teacher Edition. The second one is for the Professional Edition.

•    Processor: G3, Mac OS X-compatible processor or higher
•    Operating System: Mac OS X version 10.2.8 or later
•    Memory: 256 MB of RAM
•    Hard Disk1: 450 MB for a recommended install, 630 MB for a full drag-and-drop install
•    Drives: CD-ROM drive (or connection to a local area network if installing over a network)
•    Display: 1024 x 768 or higher-resolution monitor displaying thousands of colors
•    Input Devices: Mouse or compatible pointing device

Additional items or services required to use certain features:
•    Modem: 14.4 Kbps or higher.
•    Internet Access: Internet connection through either an Internet service provider (ISP) or a network. Internet access might require a separate fee to an ISP; local or long-distance telephone charges might also apply.

1 The hard disk should be in Mac OS Extended (HFS+) format, the default format for Mac OS X. Although you can perform a drag-and-drop installation of and run Office 2004 from a hard disk that is in another format, Microsoft does not currently support such a configuration. To determine the format of your hard disk, see the Devices and Volumes tab of Apple System Profiler.
--------------------------------------------------------
•    Processor: 700 MHz native* PowerPC G3, G4 or G5 processor
•    Operating System: Mac OS X version 10.2.8-10.3; Mac OS X version 10.3 is required for the Power Mac G5
•    Memory: 512 MB of RAM
•    Hard Disk1: 3 GB of available hard-disk space
•    Drives: CD-ROM or DVD-ROM: CD-ROM drive (or connection to a local area network if installing over a network)
•    Input Devices: Mouse or compatible pointing device

Additional items or services required to use certain features:
•    Modem: 14.4 Kbps or higher.

* Upgrade cards and accelerators are not supported. --------------------------------------------------------
My other recommendation is to make sure your 2004 software is fully updated to the present update out there. Also, to be on the safe side, try scanning all of the files with a(n) Virus Protection software. Sometimes, files can pick up viruses than can make their creator start to act funny.

Your effort to be helpful is certainly appreciated, but what does all this
have to do with the problem stated by the OP? Especially since the OP
reported back - a week ago - that the problem had already been resolved as a
result of Diane's initial response.

FYI - The only reason for the distinction in specs between Mac Office
Professional & the other 2004 editions is due to the inclusion of Virtual
PC, which requires more system resources to run. There's no difference in
the other Office apps themselves from one edition to the other.
