MS Office 2004 and OS X network homes

Does anyone have any solid info/documentation on MS Office 2004
support (or lack there of) for OS X Server 10.4.x network home
directories?

I work in a medium size school district that is just now getting up to
speed on the IT side. We upgraded to server accounts and network homes
for students this year - staff have portable homes and so are not
experiencing any of these problems. Students from time to time have
issues with app's in the Office 2004 suite including not being able to
save doc's, doc's mysteriously disappearing from their network home,
printer list not showing up when they attempt to print a file, app
closing with no errors when they go to print, etc.

I have seen a few posts here and in other groups mentioning that MS
Office 2004 does not support network homes but have seen no
documentation, possible workarounds, etc. Also, is this problem, if it
is a problem, fixed in Office 2008?

Any help and or info would be greatly appreciated.

Have a look at the Office 2004 Resource Kit found here

On page 63 you will find the following:

User home folders can be located on the user’s computer or remotely on a
file server that uses AFP.
Important
    An Entourage user cannot be logged on simultaneously to two computers
that access the same identity on a single remote home folder.

The file server can be any of the following:
    • A server that is running Mac OS X Server or AppleShare IP
    • A Windows 2000 Server or later version running Microsoft
    Services for Macintosh with
    optional User Authentication Module (UAM)
    • A Windows-based server that is running a third-party product
    such as ExtremeZ-IP File Server that supports AFP. For more
    information about ExtremeZ-IP File Server, see the GroupLogic
    Web site at http://www.grouplogic.com.
