Mac Forum / Applications / MS Office / May 2008Excel is Gone
I have Office 2004 for my Mac laptop. I ran the Microsoft updater last night, bringing it completely up-to-date, but after the installation, Excel seems to have been uninstalled. I can't find it anywhere on my hard disk and the shortcut to it on the dock is now dead. I would just re-install, but I don't have the Office 2004 disk. This is just completely bizarre to me. Has anyone heard of this happening before? Any suggestions? If it's not in the Trash, then sorry, it has indeed gone! I assume you have run a Search of your hard disk for "Excel"? If it's not there, it's not there, and you will need to find your Office disk and licence key: there is no other way to get it. Before anything else, however, I'd try running Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions followed by the same utility's Verify Disk routine. If Excel can't be found after that reinstallation & updating is about the only option unless you have a current full backup of your hard drive to recover with. Check in an invisible folder named "lost+found" The folder is located at the root level of the hard drive. To find this hidden folder called "lost+found, do a search for "invisible files" and "Excel". If you are lucky, you'll find the missing files. Note: Due to a bug in 10.4 (still not fixed AFAIK) the Finder cannot find invisible files. It is better to activate the finder, then under the 'go' menu, select 'go to folder'. In that dialog, enter "/lost+found" (without the quotes). If there is a lost+found folder it will open, if not, you will get a 'folder not found' error. In the future you can stuff/zip your Office folder prior to updating. This copy can be used to rescue a disaster like you experienced. I've lost my excel app and honestly, don't want to use another key just to get excel. I want to use my keys for my new computers, not covering the hind end of an inept programmer. Keys are not the same on the Mac. You can reuse them over and over. It's not like activation. SignatureDiane |
