Well, your memory serves you well on at least one point - None of the Office
apps generate such a file on their own :)
There must be something you've installed or or a file you've obtained that
is causing the file to be created... Possibly a .xls or .doc that contains a
macro or has deposited something in one of the startup folders. Give some
thought to what it might be. Unfortunately I have not seen this, so I
couldn't hazard a guess as to exactly what may be creating it. The name of
the file "suggests" that it is associated with a .xls, but that's just a
guess.
What does the file icon look like? Command+Click it & use Get Info to see if
it reveals anything about the origin or file type. That will also tell you
the creation date & time. Any additional insight would be helpful.
Can it be deleted? If so, does another get generated on the next launch? Can
you tell if it is being replaced each time you launch one of the apps or are
there separate ones being created if the prior copy is still there? Does
launching PPt or any of your non-MS apps cause one to be created?
Also, you might take a look in Applications\Microsoft Office
2004\Office\Startup and see if the Word and/or Excel folders have anything
that shouldn't be there.
I'm sure others will have input on the issue as well.

Turns out it was caused by an app called Across Lite, a free app which
enables one to do newspaper crossword puzzles online. It is the only
thing I've downloaded recently, so I trashed it, and, sure enough,
when I then created a Word document, no corresponding "score data"
document showed up.
I shall redownload it as I like the software, and I'll just ignore the
"score data" docs. I guess I should also pass on info about the glitch
to the software makers.
Appreciated your suggestion. I never associated the glitch with other
software and kept looking within Office for the solution.

Glad you solved the mystery - and that it wasn't any more damaging than that
:)
