Can't open Documents

When I try and open documents on my Office 2004 for Mac I get an error
message, saying that the file can't be opened because it is already
opened or some other program is trying to open it.

I know that it is not open anywhere else and I have the same problem
with Excel, Word, and Powerpoint documents that I received from co-
workers in Entourage.  The files I received where all created on PC
systems.

Any thoughts???

OK, we need to do a little differential diagnosis here because this one is
going to be complex.

First, please work your way patiently through the trouble-shooting tips
here: http://word.mvps.org/Mac/TroubleshootingIndex.html

Your description of the symptoms indicate the possibility of an
out-of-control antivirus program or a nasty hard disk error.  But we're a
way from being in a known condition where we can safely take you down those
paths.

Cheers

One thing to clarify as part of the diagnosis--

can you open documents that you yourself created in Office programs?

is it *only* the documents you receive from co-workers that show this
problem, or *all* documents?

I have the problem when I open documents that I have received from
others.  When I create a document myself I don't have a problem.

Which antivirus are you running?  Are you running Spotlight?

Have you yet worked through the trouble-shooting tips?

We need to know your update versions and levels before we can go much
further.

Cheers

Thank you so much for all your help. I used your webpage to diognose
my problem and it turned out to be a disk permission issue. I
reformated my harddrive and reinstalled Office.  Now I am running as
smoothly as ever.  I really appeciate you help John!!

Markus:

Congatulations on getting up and running again.

Wow!  Reformatting is a little more than we usually recommend :-)

These issues are almost always munged preferences files.  Or a munged
Microsoft Office User Database.

Cheers
