thanks in advance...

Currently, Office 2007 is the only software that can open files in the new
XML format. If I'm not mistaken, there might also be beta converters
available for Office XP and 2003, but on the Mac side, there is no such
thing (yet). Microsoft have announced that there is going to be a converter
for Office 2004 at some point (and maybe even Office v.X, I don't remember
exactly), but it has yet to be released. There's no official release date,
either, so for now, you will either have to install Office 2007 on your Mac
in a Windows environment, such as Virtual PC, Boot Camp or Parallels, or ask
the person who sent you the document to save it in the traditional file
format and resend it to you.
