Hi,

In the new version of office (office 2007), what will be the available
office suites and programs for
mac? I am thinking of migrating from my current windows PC to a MacBookPro
at Christmas but, I will need office for my work.

Many thanks,
The Short One

Hi,

it's a little bit too soon to make any definite statement about this. First
of all, it's quite likely that it's not going to be Office 2007, but rather
Office 2008; Mac Office is usually released a year or so after Win Office,
and this time, there's a lot of work to be done by the MacBU because of the
switch to Intel, so I'd be really surprised if it came out next year
already. Secondly, there are no official statements about this either, so
what follows now are only my personal guesses: you'll still get the
traditional core programs, Word, Entourage, Excel and PowerPoint, and I'd
also expect the Student & Teacher and the Standard editions to remain
largely unchanged. I don't know anything about the future of Virtual PC,
which is a component of the Professional edition, so, once again, it's hard
to make predictions.

If you are migrating to a MacBook Pro and you really need Office, then you
should probably get the current version (Office 2004), which, according to
some reports, performs quite well on Intel Macs, in spite of the fact that
it has to be run through the Rosetta emulation layer. Office 2007 (Windows)
is going to be released early next year, but, as I've said already, the Mac
version is probably going to take a while, so waiting for that one to be
released is probably not an option.
