Office 2004 SP2 Update Failure

I have tried everything I can find to get service pack 2 for Office
2004 to run on my G4 iMac:

-Repaired permissions
-Ran periodic daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance
-Updated the pre-binding
-Re-registered all Office products back to English using the Microsoft
Language Register (suggested on macfixit.com)
-Logged in as a different administrator-level user

All attempts to update result in the SP not finding a "qualifying
product" and the installer simply presents a "Quit" option.  Very
helpful!

Any ideas?

Use the Remove Office utility in Microsoft Office 2004/Additional Tools/
folder to remove Office and all support files: it will leave all your data
(Entourage identities, databases, Normal template, etc.) intact.

Re-install Office 2004 from the Office CD.: you'll need the Product ID Key.

Use the Auto-Updater (or "Check for Updates" in any office app's Help menu)
to check for and install SP 2.

Wow.  Sooooo....reinstall, huh?

Gosh, I never would have figured that out.

Gee, thanks a pantload.

Anyone else?

Did you perhaps move the Office 2004 file? I think the installer looks for
it in the Applications folder.

Otherwise, not a clue.

Remove and Reinstall does kill a few customizations, by the way:

The installation is where the default install put it.  I changed
nothing.

The question is whether you knew to use the Remove Office utility. If you
don't, reinstalling won't likely fix anything.

Takes about 5 minutes. What's the problem?

You could try just removing the ~/Library/Preferences/Microsoft/ folder
first, and the com/Microsoft files loose in the same Preferences folder.

With that reply? I doubt it...

Especially since you originally wrote "I have tried everything I can
find" and didn't mention Remove Office or reinstallation.

Were we supposed to read your mind?

Hi Scott,

What version shows when doing a Get Info on one of the Office apps?

Have you tried using Auto Update to install the update, rather than a
downloaded version?

Thanks,
Rebecca

Version 11.1 for Word, Excel shows 11.1.1...

Yes, I tried both.  Same error message.
