Problems with Office 2004 and Tiger

I've had major problems with Office ever since installing Tiger, though I'm
not completely sure Tiger is the culprit.  Excel runs at a snails pace - I
have to wait several seconds each time I input any number in a cell.  Also,
both Excel and Word crash (stop responding) when loading them up, without
reason.

Memory should not be an issue; I've got a PowerBook G4 with 1.5GB of ram and
both Word and Excel ran like melting butter on 10.3

I may uninstall Office and re-install, to see if it still has problems.  If
so, will uninstall Tiger and re-install 10.3, to see if that fixes it.   But
before I do so, I was wondering if anyone else had experienced similar
problems?

What version of Office, have you run all updates?

See some of the office troubleshooting pages here:
http://www.mcgimpsey.com/macoffice/

See here for best practice on Remove and Reinstall Office:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/RemoveReinstall.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Your problems don't sound familiar, but you'd be best off using google
groups to search the entire microsoft.public.mac.office.* hierarchy to see
if anyone else has reported them.

Yes, I haven't read anything anywhere either, so I'm thinking a simple
uninstall/reinstall should solve the problem.

We are experiencing the same problem since we upgraded to Tiger.  We
have 6 Macs in our office and all are running Office:Mac 2004 with all
updates applied.  Since we upgraded to Tiger on all the Macs, Office
has been running very slow i.e., typing an e-mail in entourage we get
the pinwheel while typing, then eventually the words catch up to us
about a sentence and a half later.  Same thing in word and excel takes
forever for things to happen.  Hope we can find out the issue.....

Well--this can't hurt.

People reporting slowdowns and beachballing in Entourage have said that
telling Spotlight not to try to index the Entourage Identities (which it
can't index anyhow) fixes the constant hangs.  It seems barely conceivable
this could make a difference elsewhere, assuming you all have Entourage
databases accumulated.

In preferences for Spotlight, add the MS User Data folder or the Identities
folders under the Privacy tab.

We just tried something and it seamed to help.  We reran permissions
and verified then rebooted the machine and now everything seems to work
properly again.....Give it a try, couldn't hurt....

Could you explain how to "rerun permissions" ?

I also hate to say it, but the other common denominator (other than Tiger)
is that I've been working on a Keynote presentation.  I wonder if that could
have had anything to do with it...

Open Disk Utility, select your drive and click on the "repair
Permissions" button.

Sorry I didn't get back to you, I had to take an emergency trip and was
off-line for awhile.....I hope the response from Corentine helped....

I'd like to report the same thing.

I just had to open Excel for the first time since I upgraded to Tiger, and
the performance was terrible! (Seconds to move between cells)

I've removed the ~/Microsoft User Data folder from Spotlight's indexing..
And I've repaired permissions... No help here.

I *did* have the Entourage slowdown problems - but those seem to have gone
away since I've made the Spotlight change.

James,
What is the Entourage change?

See my second post on this thread--replying to you, in fact.

Thanks.  Actually you were not replying to me but to another person in the
thread; I do not have problems with Entourage (knock on wood!) but if I do,
I'll know where to go.  Appreciate your help.

Incidentally I did a re-install of Office Mac and am still having the same
problems in Word.  Excel "seems" ok so far.

Whoops, got confused.

If you are only having Word problems now, try these standard troubleshooting
tips:
http://word.mvps.org/MacWordNew/TroubleshootingIndex.htm
(hit refresh a few times in Safari, or use a different browser)

Work through them one by one until something helps.  If nothing does, post
back.

Alternatively, test it in a new user account.  If the new account works,
switch over to it. If the new user account doesn't work, go straight to the
instructions for Remove and Reinstall.

I tried a new user account; the same problem occurs.

I think I have it isolated to one particular problem: changing bullet styles
in a table from within Notebook View.  Strangely, you cannot create tables
from Notebook view but you can edit one in notebook view that was created in
Page Layout view.  That is when the beachballing occurs.  I no longer use
Notebook View and am having no problem.  I did not have this problem before
upgrading to Tiger.
