Page number printing issue Word 2004

I recently got a new powerbook (running OS 10.3.8) and installed Office
2004.  An irritating discovery is that when I print Word documents with
page numbers, instead of the page numbers printing, I get just the
field code {PAGE} in the footer.  The number display correctly on the
screen.  I've tried restarting the application, downloading the most
recent office update and coverting to pdf, all to no avail.

Any suggestions? Am I missing something?

Thanks.

Word | Preferences, Print tab--under Include with Document, uncheck Field
Codes.
