Can't save older file / Compatability Report

MacNeophyte and not liking it - 21 Feb 2005 09:27 GMT
I have some older files created with Word 6.0/95 versions on a PC and
when I open them, modify them and try to save them, they won't save
without changing the name.  I tried trying turning off the "check
documents for compatibility" button, but it still won't let me save
them.

I haven't had anything running Word 6.0 in years, and will never try to
open them in that format again, but why can't I get the Mac to just
over-write to a new file format?

The "help" files and explainations of the "compatability report" are as
unhelpful as I have come to expect from Microsquish, therefore I am
going to the real experts, the users.

Thanks.

Hello-

Typically programs save pre-existing files in the same format, and the
6.0/95 format did not allow longer file names or certain other
"liberties" we now enjoy. However, that format is so out-of-date that
Word is trying to tell you that the file will be saved in the more
current format, but can't have the same name as the original. Once you
save in the new format you can delete the older files.

Hope this helps |:>)

Hi ,
It could be possible that the Original file is locked and thus cannot be
edited and saved .
Please try :
Select the file icon on finder
click File | Get Info (command + I )
look at ownership and permissions . If it is read and write (and you have
not set read only security option in word preferences ) then you should not
have this problem . If it is not, then please set it to read and write  and
try saving again .

Thanks,
Priyanka
