I am trying to get a list of available newsgroups on subjects other than
Micro$oft but don't know how. I am running Express 5 on a Mac G3 OS 9.2. I
tried "Get complete Newsgroup List" in the View in the toolbar but it only
updates that specific newsgroup not ones outside Micro$oft. Any help would
be appreciated.

Well, are you using the microsoft news server in Tools > Accounts > News?
If so, MS groups will be all that's visible.

To access a wider range of groups, you need to specify your ISP's news
server in Tools > Accounts > News.  Contact your ISP for this information if
you don't know it.  If your ISP does not carry a news server of their own,
you may need to pay for a third-party news server (or switch to a better
ISP!)

All requests for support should be sent to the newsgroups only.

If you do need to reply directly to me, just remove the capitalised letters
from my faked e-mail address.

I suggest that you do not post to these newsgroups using your real e-mail
address!  See Q048 on http://machelp.webhop.net/ for more details on
protecting yourself from newsgroup spam.

Thank you for the helpful information. I followed your direction and setup
the newsgroup. Now when I try to download list of newsgroups I get an error
message saying: The server returned the following error- 502 Authentication
Failed. When I axed my ISP to help they walked me through the setup and said
everything was in order and it was a Microsoft issue which they did not
support (and couldn't find info of Micro's website).
What bugs me is that I have 2 other newsgroups that are active - this being
one, so I know it werks. Any further help you can offer I will devour.
Thanks, RHP

If your ISP is providing you with a standard news server, I should imagine
that it would not require any specific authentication details, so I'm not
quite sure why you should be encountering a 502 error.

When you say that you "have 2 other newsgroups that are active", are you
talking about Microsoft newsgroups?  If so, that doesn't prove anything
further than what you stated in your original post.

Regardless of this, any ISP worth their salt should be able to talk you
through this process; configuring newsgroup access isn't a massively
complicated procedure, or at least it shouldn't be!

The other group is Macromedia and I forget how I signed up for that one.
I did fill in the account info as you instructed. Can I set up a newsgroup
that doesn't go through my ISP? Or do I have to go through them to get a
list? I don't want to pay a 3rd party for something I'm not sure I'll use
much.
Again thanks for the follow-up.
