After receiving several emails, two of which contained a
large number of photo attachments, my OE 5 stopped
receiving emails and would crash every time I clicked onto
SEND/RECEIVE or RECEIVE ALL.  I gEt a Type 11 error
message.

I can SEND, but I cannot RECEIVE.

I have deleted the emails, emptied several files, and, of
course, have restarted the computer on many occasions, but
have not found a solution to this problem.

Try to compact the database...

...and perhaps also increase the memory assigned to OE...
