Outlook Express 5.06 won't display pictures

I am using Outlook Express 5.06 on a Mac running OS 9.2.2 and for some time
now any picture included in the message is replaced by a box with red circle
with a white cross in it.  Attachments work fine.

This has been getting worse and for the past few months no pictures will
display in the message.

I have built OS 9.2.2 from scratch on 8 or 9 Macs and I have installed
Outlook Express 5 on each of them and all of the Macs behave the same way.
That is, Outlook Express displays these red circles in place of document
pictures on the first and subsequent emails received.

Can someone help me please.

Try to increase the memory assigned to OE...

...and also compact the database...

Thanks Ricky

I have already tried your suggestions and the problem is still there.  It's
strange that the problem exists on other Mac's on which I have installed
operating systems from scratch, from Apple licenced CDs and Apple and
Microsoft site downloads.  Could it be anything to do with where the
application is installed?

In my case Outlook Express and Explorer are installed in the Internet folder
in the Applications folder.  The microsoft user data folder containing
message data and identities is in the Documents folder which is normal.
Perhaps the software that interprets the pictures in the documents is not
where it is suppose to be, where ever that is.

Looking forward to hearing more

John

Perhaps there's a common component that is missing on all of your standard
installations of the Operating System.  For example, have you made sure that
QuickTime is enabled on all of the machines?  Without this, you're going to
have problems processing images.

FWIW, I doubt very strongly that this is anything to do with the physical
location of the OE application on each machine.

Quicktime is running because when I double-click on its desktop alias the
program launches.  Some clarification though, if someone sends me a picture
as an attachment it displays at the bottom of the message without me having
to open the attachments area, so that works.

However, if a vendor such as Apple sends me an email newsletter containing
images and text where I would click on the image which would then link me to
something specific at their site, all I get in the image spot is the red
circle with the white cross in it.  Usually I can click on the red circle
and I will be taken to the link.  Outlook Express is behaving as if the mail
script couldn't find an application which would display the ad image.

It might then be the inability to automatically connect to the Internet to
pull this content down.  Are you online while you are trying to view such
HTML e-mails?

Thanks for the clue Ricky!!!  That is the answer.  With your advice and some
experimenting I found the following:

If Outlook Express is launched with Work Offline "not checked" the images
are displayed correctly.  However, if Outlook Express is launched with Work
Offline "checked" then the images will not be displayed even if Work Offline
is changed from "checked" to "not checked" during the session.  In other
words, changing the status of Work Offline from "checked" to "not checked"
during a session does not enable images to be displayed.  A user has to exit
Outlook Express with Work Offline "not checked" and re-launch the Outlook
Express to see the images.

Interesting anomaly.

Thanks again

John
