I keep all my old mail.  Outlook Express hold all of it in
one large file, "Messages".  That file has become so big it
becomes cumbersome when I do backups.  I'd like therefore
to split it into two files:  one containing all my old
messages, which can be backed up just once, say on a CD,
and the other containing only recent messages, for which
I'll want to refresh the back-up frequently.

So question:  is there a way to split the OE Messages file
into two:  one containing mail messages prior to a given
date, and one with current messages?

Thanks!

You can't do exactly what is suggested in your post, but there is an
alternative that should suit your needs.

Individual messages can be dragged directly out of the OE Inbox and onto the
Desktop to be saved there as separate .EML files.  You just drag one or more
messages from the top-right pane of OE out onto the Desktop (or another
folder) and that will keep them safe until you need them again.  If you need
to restore these messages at any point, simply drag them back into the
Inbox, and they will reappear there as new, unread mail.

Thus, you can keep hold of your newer messages in this convenient manner and
use the normal back-up method to safeguard the entire mailbox (just make
copies of your Messages and Database files).

Dear Ricky and Co

I have used the drag and drop method to back up our email but I have
found some of the messages cannot be opened again. They also take up
zero kb on the desktop?!? There is also an email in each folder where
this problem has occurred which is at least 1gb is size. I presume
this is where the missing data has gone but I don't know how to open
these enormous emails. I'm going to let Outlook Express process one
all night tonight but I was wondering if anyone else had this problem
and if there is any way of getting these emails to work again as I had
deleted them from my inbox before I noticed the problem?

Another avenue I could take is to possibly restore emails which have
been deleted from the 'Deleted Items' folder. I wouldn't have thought
this was possible but as the 'Messages' folder hasn't gotten any
smaller I assume the email data is still in there in some form. Is it
possible to retrieve these messages?

Thanks in advance for your help,

I'm on Mac system 9.1 with OE 5

Sorry, make that Mac system 9.1 with OE 5.06. With regards to getting
Outlook to open one of the large emails which appear to contain all
the other data, which I said I would do last night, Outlook doesn't
succeed in opening them. It opens instead a blank email with
'untitled' in the window panel and has an attachment which is equal to
the ridiculously large size of the email. Curiously this attachment
was a .dwg file. This is a fairly common type of attachment for us to
receive. (CAD drawing, Illustrator can open em)

If anyone is actually reading this I would be happy to clarify any
points in this problem I'd really like to know if anyone has
encountered it.

By the way my 'messages'  file was over 2gb when all this happened and
I think this is why it happened.

You could try increasing the memory allocation of OE...

..and then try to compact the database...

<http://techiegrim.webhop.net/keyboard/oe5_database.html>

I would suggest however that you are unlikely to achieve much success here,
since Classic OS imposes a filesize limit of 2Gb which, as you suggested, is
probably the culprit of these problems.
