I've seen the same thing happen, but have not come across a definite
fix. Did you go to the "Spelling" tab in Edit -> Preferences and
verify you have the correct dictionary selected?

Start by increasing the memory allocation to Outlook Express. Quit
Outlook Express, select the Outlook Express program icon, and then go
to File -> Get Info -> Memory. Set the Preferred size to about
20000k. Relaunch Outlook Express and see if the problem persists.
