upgrading 5.0.2 database to 5.2/OS10?

I have a huge (1.7 GB) database in 5.0.2 (OS8.6) which I'm trying to
recover from a dead drive, and I'm thinking of getting a G4 with OS10. A
friend said he lost his database in the process of upgrading to OS10/OE
5.2. What is the correct procedure to avoid this? I will need to somehow
transfer the data from a beige G3 (SCSI). If necessary I guess I could
continue to use 5.0.2 and OS9.2, but pretty soon I'd have to get rid of a
lot of messages since the maximum database size in 9.2 is 2 GB, right? How
large a database can 5.2 handle?

Another question: Microsolf says that 5.0.6 does not not come with an
uninstaller. If download 5.0.6 and start a new database can I somehow get
my recovered database into it, or import the messages from the new
database into 5.0.2, or should I just wait until I can recover the old
database and 5.0.2 application? I am currently accessing my email from my
website through squirrelmail but it often won't display (or send)
messages. Anyone know what this error message on log-in means?

ERROR : Could not complete request.
Query:EXAMINE "INBOX"
Reason Given: EXAMINE failed: Unable to extend mailbox: Disk quota exceeded

The last time I used it back in August it always worked.

OK, you're off the mark with a number of terms here - let's try to clear a
few things up...

OE 5.0.2 exists
OE 5.0.6 exists
OE 5.2 does not exist

The data that you need to back up will be stored in the Identities folder
which exists in one of the following two directories...

1) Mac HD:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities:
2) Mac HD:[path to OE application folder]:Identities:

The most common pathway above for OS 8.6 would be (2).

If you want to move this information onto OS X, back-up the Identities
folder and then place it on the OS X machine in the following location...

Mac HD/Users/[your username]/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Identities

This will allow OE to see the Identities folder if you launch it on the OS X
machine.

If you want to move this information onto OS 9.2 instead, back-up the
Identities folder and then place it on the OS 9.2 machine in the following
location...

Mac HD:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities:

The 2Gb limit is not imposed by OS 9.x but rather by HFS+.  Therefore if you
do move up to OE 5.0.6, don't expect that to change your Messages and
Database filesize limits.

Your "Unable to extend mailbox: Disk quota exceeded" error on Squirrel is
because your Squirrel mailbox is full.  You likely need to clear out your
Inbox and Deleted Items folders there to resolve that issue.

HTH,

Ricky
