What does "Check" mean?

I am new to Outlook Express. What does clicking "Check" accomplish? The Check
button is between the Undo and Spelling buttons. There visible when I compose
a new email or answer one.

It basically sounds more like it's for checking for new mail. To test it, click on it and see what happens.
