Multiple OE Databases on One Mac

My mom was having trouble with OE and asked me to take a look...

She is running OS 9.0.4 on an old iMac G3.  I found multiple copies of OE on
her machine (5.0.2 and 5.0.6).  Also found multiple Identity Folders and
databases.  She has only one user set-up.  (I have deleted all but the
current OE version.)

The dilemma is that most of her recent activity, including her most current
address book is contained in "Identity #1".  Sometime in the last month, an
older Identity took over ("Identity #2"), so the last few weeks of mail are
now in this Identity, which is active and behaving properly.

I have tried in vain to get Identity #1 back as the primary Identity, with
no luck.  I have also tried to Import data from Identity #1 into #2 so all
the data is together.  When I do this, the Import screens walk me through
until the final step, and then no import occurs.

I moved to OS X and Entourage a couple years ago, and can't recall how to
manage OE identities.  Any help is appreciated!

I would suggest that you manually export the messages you want to keep from
one of the Identities via method 1 here...

...and then manually import those into the other Identity.

Thanks.  I will try that.  HOWEVER, in my previous post, I noted:  "I have
tried in vain to get Identity #1 back as the primary Identity, with no
luck."

I can't recall the specific messages I rec'd, but OE did not seem to want to
recognize this Identity.  If it won't be recognized, and I can't import from
it, does that suggest corruption?  I don't think holding down the Option key
to commence rebuild or compact worked either.

Any other ideas?  Thank you!

It could be corrupt, but it depends on what you've done to try to get OE to
recognise that Identity.

If Identity 1 and Identity 2 are in the same Identities folder, you should
be able to view both via the File > Switch Identity... menu item.  As some
general advice, I recommend ticking the box that says "Show this list at
startup" while you're dealing with the issue.

If you can't launch Identity 1 using this method, it could be that the
"Preferences" file within that Identity is corrupt.  Try moving it out of
the Identity 1 folder and then try to launch Identity 1 again.  Does it work
now?  Note that moving/deleting the "Preferences" file will mean that the
information in Tools > Accounts will have been forgotten, but that won't
affect the mails/contacts within the Identity itself.

Hi again Ricky-

I tried as you suggested with no luck (tossing the preferences file).  OE
did not automatically recognize my problem Identity, so I had to Select it
when prompted.  In response, I received an Error 4362 message.  I am
guessing that the database is corrupt, but am hoping you have another
suggestion!

FYI - The Messages file is 1.3 GB, and the Database is very large too.

If this is in fact corrupt, are there any other options for extracting data,
especially from the address book?

Many thanks,

Hi,

Well, that doesn't sound too great.  The normal resolution would be to go
for a compact or complex rebuild...

<http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tg.online/keyboard/oe5_database.html>

If that doesn't work, we're probably out of options.  I'm afraid that I
don't know of any reliable way to extra data from a corrupt OE mail archive.
