If I try to type a name in the To: line that starts with D, OE5 crashes
instantly. I get Error 2 and a warning to save stuff and restart.
This problem has survived tossing preferences, replacing the program, and
endless fiddling.
Anyone else?

I'd guess that you've got a corrupt entry in your address book.  I would
remove all entries beginning with a 'd' (or including a 'd' at the start of
any of the important fields) and make sure that that temporarily resolves
the problem.  Then, start to add those removed contacts back in and see what
happens.
