Inbox 'unread messages' error

I have been asked a question by a work mate , who's OE inbox states there
are 6 unread messages , but he has read them all and any new mail that comes
in adds to this number until he has read them and he is left with '6' again .
All his sub -folders are 'read' also .
Can anyone explain this please ?

Doesn't sound like an "unread only" or "flagged only" view setting, so if
he's sure, try to compact the database and see if that helps...
