Not sure I've come across that one before, but I'd always start off with the
basics. Has she made sure that the small blue disclosure triangle is
pointing downwards? Has she tried to turn off the Preview Pane in the View
menu? Has she accidentally resized the Preview Pane so that it is almost
invisible?
If it's nothing obvious, it's possible that there's genuinely something
wrong, in which case, I'd try to compact the database and see if that
helps...

Could it be that she accidentally changed the view of the inbox?
Such as; Apple-Shift-Y, (Flagged only)?
This would display an empty inbox, unless she had flagged something earlier.
