On my Mac (9.2), there is a file "Messages" which is located...

Hard Drive
  Documents
     Microsoft User Data
           Identities
               Main Identity
                   Messages

The file is now 835.3 MB. I would like to reduce the size of this file. I
have deleted nearly half of my saved messages (and their attachments) but
the size of the file didn't change. As an experiment, I tried dragging the
file to the desktop and restarting Outlook Express. A new "messages" file is
established and of the messages appear but I am impaired in opening some of
them. When I replaced the new file with the old "messages" file, I was again
able to open all messages.

Is there a way of purging this file so that it relates to only the messages
saved?

Compact the database, that should do the trick...
