Outlook Express for OS X Tiger

When will Microsoft release a version of Outlook Express for OS X which
does not require Classic to be installed?  Has there been a release for
OS X Tiger?

I like Outlook Express from my PC days, and would like to be able to
use it.  However, I am unable to, since it requires Classic to be
installed (I don't have a version of OS X previous to Tiger).

Outlook Express is no longer in development for the Mac OS.  Microsoft
provide Entourage (a similar, but superior mail client) as a standalone
application or as part of the Office suite.  Note that Entourage is a
commercial package i.e. it's not free.

Why not use the built-in Apple Mail application?  It's much improved from
earlier incarnations, and well worth a try IMO.

An alternative mail client that's been getting a lot of support recently has
been Thunderbird (freeware).  You can download it here...

I have been unable to find a stand-alone copy of Entourage anywhere.
Even Microsoft's website says that it is only included with the full
Office suite.

I would really appreciate a link to a stand-alone copy of Entourage.
I've googled it, surfed for it, done every thing I can do to find it.
But have been totally unsuccessful.

Anyway, I wanted Outlook Express mostly for its Usenet client.
(believe it or not, it is far superior as a Usenet client than ANY OS X
app I have found.)

I like Mail, but its junk mail facilites certainly leave much to be
desired( e.g. they don't work.).  Anyway, it has no Usenet client
included.

Been there, done that.  Open Source == "Very buggy"
In addition, it has no boolean views editor.  In fact, *every* OS X
client I have found has no boolean views editor.  I don't even think
that Entourage has one.

Hi again,

I'm very sure that Entourage was available as a standalone product for a
while.  You're right though, you can't buy it on its own anymore (yet you
*can* buy standalone copies of Word, Excel and PowerPoint!)

I find Entourage fine for standard Usenet reading, though I prefer MT
NewsWatcher (freeware), which is available here...

Thanks, Ricky.  I downloaded it and have to admit that it is the best
I've found for OS X so far.  I does almost all I want.  However, it does
not have a boolean views editor.

I guess I'm going to have to settle with it for now.

Apparently, I did have the Classic environment on a secondary disk somewhere
in my brother's Mac collection, so I've been putting Outlook Express through
its paces.

So far it runs smoothly.  The Mac version is definintely different than the
Windows version, both in philosophy and operation.  For one thing, the Mac
version downloads newsgroups and articles much faster than the Windows
version.

Rule creation is more primitive ( == easier ) in the Mac version than in the
Windows version.

Email operations are carried out immediately.  However, there is little
indication that a server is being polled, or its status.  This definitely
needs improving.
