I've been using Outlook Express 5.0.2 for a few years. I have an older
iBook (clam shell and Bondi Blue) and use OS 9.2.2. I get mail for two
different accounts using Earthlink. The mail comes in automatically,
but I always like to download it manually as well.
Lately, I haven't been able to manually download mail by hitting
Command-M. The only way to manually collect the mail is to go to Tools
- Run Schedule - Send and Receive Mail - but only for one account. My
other account works fine.
I realized that in my Account Settings window, the box for "Include
with Send and Receive All" was not checked. Not sure why, as it is for
my other account and it always had been for this now problematic
account as well.
Naturally I checked it so that I'd be able to get mail with a simple
key command.
However, when I went to close the Account Settings window, a dialogue
box came up stating that a Type 2 error occurred and that Outlook
Express had quit. Knowing that odd things happen, I didn't think
anything of it. I opened OE again, clicked on the same box, and again
it quit with the same Type 2 error message.
Hmmm. I restarted the computer. Same result after clicking on the box
in the Account Settings window.
I've run Norton's Utilities as well as Tech Tool 3. Still, I cannot get
that one account to accept having that box clicked. I've even unclicked
that box for my other email account, thinking that for some reason my
computer suddenly will allow me to have only one account with the
option to have Send and Receive all available. Even then, when I
clicked that box in the Account Settings window of the problematic
account, OE quit out and I recevied the same Type 2 error message
dialogue box.
I have gone into the Schedule menu to make sure that everything's the
same for each account. The ONLY difference is that with the account
that does work properly, the enabled schedule's name is bold. In the
account that causes the Type 2 error, the name is not bold. I have no
idea how to make it bold or how to unbold it. The name on each is "Send
& Receive All."
Each account's schedule is set for "repeating schedule" every "0"
minutes. That way I am able to manually download email whenever I want.
Last, out of desperation, I went and downloaded another copy of OE. It
was v5.06, not 5.0.2. However, there's been no change whatsoever. I do
not have a disk with OE on it. This computer used to belong to my
former employer, and when I left she allowed me to take it with me.
Thanks for whatever help you're able to provide.

The Schedules and/or Preferences files could be corrupt. They can be found
here...

I would try to delete the Schedules file first, then launch OE again and
configure Tools > Schedules appropriately.
BTW, I don't think setting a repeating schedule of 0 minutes will be very
well received by OE, as it effectively commands it constantly to check for
new mail.

Thanks very much for the information. Deleting the Schedules file and
reconfiguring Schedules worked perfectly.
