Hi:
I hope someone can give me some suggestions on how to fix my stupid
user problem.  I have a G3 Powerbook running OS 9.2.2 and using Outlook
Express 5.0 (dictated by the cable company).

This morning the computer froze up while I was deleting everything in
the deleted items folder, so I had to force a restart.  I then tried to
get into Outlook Express again.  The program started and then asked me
to choose an identity, since I had two set up.  If I choose "main
identity", I get a box that says "An error occurred while launching.  A
read/write error occurred (-40)."  If I choose the other identity,
Outlook starts up just fine, but I really need all the messages in my
main mailbox (and all the folders associated with it).  So the upshot
is I can't get my mail and of course I didn't back up recently.

I tried a couple of things to fix it: restarted many times; ran Disk
First Aid and no problems were found; ran Norton Utilities, no problems
found; tried looking  up the error message in Mactopia and Microsoft
Knowledge Base but I didn't understand the technical jargon.  If anyone
can suggest a way for me to get my email back, I will be so grateful.
Thank you.

The only suggestion I might have is to get to your new emails is to use a
webmail option to get to your ISP's site where mail can be retrieved. Call
the ISP on the telephone and ask them if they can assist you in getting your
emails resent to you from a backup tape from their mail server. Sometimes
email are achieved. This is a temporary and unsatisfactory solution I am
sure but maybe their help desk can assist you once you get them on the
phone.
