Message File Exceeds 1GB And Won't Open

I received the dreaded "end of file" error message when starting
Outlook Express 5 today on my Mac running OS9, and this is something
I've been able to fix before. Upshot is that the "Messages" file stored
in the Identities folder crossed the maximum threshold -- it's 1.01GB
(yes, I'm a pack rat). So in my trying to rebuild the database, which
didn't work, I wound up with a brand-new implementation of Outlook
without any messages -- and I can't get Outlook to import the file. So
right now I have a 34MB Messages file after importing what
separately-saved messages I had, and the 1GB file is sitting separately
as "Old Messages" on my hard drive.

Is there a way I can still open this humongous "Messages" file on
either a Mac or PC (I have access to both, as well as Macs running OSX
at the office.) I don't really care about importing all the messages
back, but there are a few from the past month that I didn't get a
chance to print out. Appreciate any assistance!

The database compact is likely to have failed because you didn't assign
enough memory to the OE application, in which case you may wish to retrace
your steps and try that process again.  Failing that, the Messages file can
be opened in a text editor such as BBEdit Lite, although the contents may be
very hard to decopher.
