I'm running OE 5 on a Beige G3 w/OS9.1. For a long time I had a situation
where OE would not open any posts containing HTML (body completely blank).
I could view the text by hitting 'reply', but that was all...no graphics. I
posted here and got some file-dump fixes that didn't solve the problem.
All of a sudden (for no apparent reason) the problem went away maybe amonth
ago. When I opened an e-mail, I could hear the processor working and the
message would open in HTML after a few seconds.
Now.... out of the blue...... the problem has started again. I have not
loaded or used any new or infrequently used software recently. I hear a few
clicks from the processor, then it stops. Is it possible that the problem
is with my ISP??? Could they be changing something that limits HTML coming
through to me??
Very frustrating. All thoughts welcome.

I would start by compacting the database if you haven't done so recently...

The error must in some way be linked to your available system resources -
generating HTML content in OE can be quite memory intensive. Have you tried
to change your virtual memory settings (Apple > Control Panels > Memory)
and/or assigned more memory to the OE application yet?

Ricky

The problem has gone away again, so it does sound like it could be resource
related. Although...... the Memory window for OE% shows:
Suggested = 7168K
Minimum= 6144K
Preferred= 10,000K
I did compact the data base a few weeks ago (during previous outbreak of
the problem) and had the problem continue after doing that.
It seems pretty certain it will re-occur.
This is a G3 with 160MB Memory, Virtual Memory @ 161MB,........ and I can
tell that it is not very fast, compared with my son's G4. It shows most in
web page loading.

As Ricky suggests,
Quit MSOE, Apple-I on MSOE, Show: pop-up, General Info, Memory, change
preferred size to something over 20,000 K, (_much_ more than this,
temporarily, whilst compacting, would also help), also, what version does it
say? Hope it is 5.0.6, update if not.
HTML can be intensive, as you could hear.
You may wish to try dumping this file too;
OE5Cache.waf, which is hiding in MS Internet Cache, Preferences, System
Folder. Just in case it got damaged by a rogue message, a fresh new one will
be created, this may be why the problem went, and came back.
Also check Outlook Express Temp in "MUD" folder, and make sure it IS empty
whilst MSOE is not open.
Then try again.
