problem with address book OE 5.02

Dear reader,

I use a mac 9.1 with OE 5.02 installed: never had any problems untill
yesterday. If I want to make new groups in the Addressbook, it
sometimes recognizes the new group, and sometimes does not.
Furthermore, at times it does not find names with 'display names
containing'...

If i would like to send a new message, I usually type the beginning of
a name and OE recognizes it, so it appears in the 'to' box. Nowadays
it may appear or it may not appear. But certainly empty spaces will
appear, to which is can go and click, and random names from my
addressbook will appear.

Has anyone had this very strange problem and solved it?
Thanx for your time...

Martin

I would export your address book as a text file via the File > Export menu.
Then try to compact the database and see if that helps...

<http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tg.online/keyboard/oe5_database.html>

If that doesn't work, switch to a new Identity (File > Switch Identity >
New) and replicate the settings in your Tools > Accounts window.  Then
import the address book that was previously saved as a text file and try
again.

After the rescue mission from Ricky.

Outlook Express Ver 5.02 supplied with OS8 & 9 is flakey pastry,
I think the current version is 5.0.6, (the last version)
free download from Microsoft Mactopia

(Proviso, do not use the alias supplied! it is broken, make your own).
But before using this version,
copy any news messages that you want to keep,
(to a subfolder of your Inbox?).

Suggest moving/(copying for safety) "Identities" to "Microsoft User Data" in
the Documents folder, if it's not there already, (don't think it was with
5.0.2). This is so you don't lose your current messages.

Did you try the suggestion of making a new Identity with a new address book
in order to test whether OE itself is at fault?
