I am using OS 9.2.2 with an iMac, OE v. 5.0.6. I receive a number of
messages daily as "returned mail" , "failure notice", "undeliverable mail",
etc. They are generally from the likes of Mail Delivery System or
Mailer-Daemon. They are easily removed but annoying nonetheless. Is this
some sort of virus and, if so, which one?

If the e-mail addresses contained within look familiar, then maybe they are
genuine bounce messages. If they don't look familiar (and particularly if
the bounce messages contain attachments) then I would treat these as suspect
and delete them immediately. This does not imply that your Mac has any kind
of virus though, so don't worry about this too much.

Thanks for the response. These are not genuine bounce messages as I get
upwards of 50-60/day, most of them with attachments.
