mirj - 27 Aug 2004 01:37 GMT Ricky, in tonight's wee hours, when you look over the postings in this newsgroup, I hope you will take a look at my query of 8/25, re doubling of incoming mail on OE 5.0.6. I've searched high and low, all the techiegrim Q&A, etc. and can't find an answer anywhere.
I am counting on you to tell me what to do.
Many thanx!
mirj

I've not had much time to look at the group recently (never move house unless you're forced to do so at gunpoint!)
How does your account look like when you view it through Online Access in OE?

What about deleting the Rules file in your Identities folder?

mirj - 27 Aug 2004 21:32 GMT Ricky, viewed though online access, the account looks totally normal. Discard my Rules? What a pain that would be! Before I resort to that, tell me if I could do a test run by moving them from the Identities folder to the DT and see if it helps?

mirj - 02 Sep 2004 16:44 GMT I am still getting all my messages doubled. I have a sound set for incoming messages, so I hear one coming in, then four seconds later, its duplicate arrives. Removing the identity rules had no effect. What else can I trash? (I am going to be more careful about my instinct to trash what seems unnecessary since last night, cleaning up my husband's crash-prone 6500, I included several asian sounding text encoding files in my cleanup, then found all his web sites filled with gobbledygook!)

Leave them well alone! :-)
Needed (as you found out) by various applications, crucial for the OS!
Depending on your OS; When using MacOS 8.6 with the extension "Text Encoding Converter" 1.4.2 or 1.4.3 installed, you should update the "Text Encoding Converter" extension to version 1.5. (along with the languages). This will fix most of the web crashes.
You can get the "Text Encoding Converter 1.5" here: <ftp://ftp.apple.com/developer/Development_Kits/TEC_1.5.sit.hqx>
Version 1.6 included with OS 9.2.1.
Hope you have a backup, or are able to install using TomeViewer, (so you don't have to do a full install, just get the bits you need) have a look on VersionTracker.com.

mirj - 06 Sep 2004 16:09 GMT Ian, I seem to have solved that problem OK! Do you have any advice about my persistently doubled incoming messages?????????

Inadvertantly double checking, (the 1st one leaving emails on the server), unlikely though! Or, possibly; Tools, Accounts, Mail, Edit, Options, Leave on Server? So they are picked up twice.
Or a Schedule, which is rather too frequent, so not letting a busy mail server realise you've already got them? If a server is running slow due to spam or virus problems, or even having to be restarted, after frequent crashes, this may give your result.
I had a similar problem briefly, when I (unwisely) left MSOE open, while browsing with MSIE, which crashed. THEN I had duplicates...

Seen the posts about battery life? <comp.sys.mac.portables> Also <www.apple.com/batteries/>

Hi all,
As a useful note to any people that have not posted here before, I suggest that you employ a spamtrap method to avoid your e-mail address being harvested and put on spam mailing lists. A lot of people have contacted me about this recently, and I can only reiterate that prevention is better than cure.
So, for those new users out there that intend to post here (or anywhere else for that matter), take a look at the following document I've written to help Outlook Express users prevent their e-mail addresses from being collected by spammers...

mimi - 10 Sep 2004 03:31 GMT Ian, Thanks for your good suggestions. You were right on target and led me to the solution.
But when you say:
<......I (unwisely) left MSOE open, while browsing with MSIE, which crashed. THEN I had duplicates...>
Are you saying that it is a mistake to keep both applications open at the same time? I always keep them both open! I have never heard that piece of advice before....

Ian_ - 13 Sep 2004 22:29 GMT Good news, so which was it? Ah, a change of personality, anti-spam! Hope that helps too.
