I am having alot of trouble in my integrated MAC/PC environment with
Files being created on the mac that have characters that the PC sees as
invalid.
We are running a Windows 2000 Server with NTFS partitions. Some of the
shares are enabled for both mac and PC and the Mac users can use
charachters like "/" and others that the PC says are invalid. Sometimes
a little "dot" shows up in the file name under another character, but
often the PCs just cannot acess the folders or files creted with these
MAC charachters.
This also creates havoc when I try to archive folders to CD since the
software I use (namely Sonic and Roxio) just tell me the file is in use
by another application, or just do not copy the folders at all. We have
had alot of data lost when making CDs because these files and folders
are ignored and subsequently deleted by the PC user mistakingly thinking
they were copied.
Now I have to let the Mac users have their toys, but the primary
platforms are PCs. The Mac users dont want to play nice and say... it
is a Microsoft problem not mine, but they cry the loudest when their
data turns up missing.
Have any other managers found reasonable methods of dealing with files
from the Mac, stored on an MS Server, that diont require me to rename
thousands of files before I can archive them to CD, short of having to
create all my CDs on a Mac (that them cannot be read on a PC)
Any input would be appreciated, even mindless flames ....
Cant we all just get along!

Hi Robert, Obviously Windows 2000 is not recognising the characters, but
have you tried using Windows XP from another machine and cutting CD¹s from
the Server.
I'm thinking that XP can see the characters, but I don¹t know allot about XP
but its worth a try!
The other people in this newsgroup are excellent and hope you get a working
suggestion.

I am using Windows XP and burning from the CD. I have also tried
copying the files to the NTFS partition on my XP machine and still have
the same problem.
