Retrieving data

I am needing to retrieve data from an iMac (original). The monitor has gone
out but the hard drive is okay. Can I use a crossover cable to load it onto
a new eMac? If so, what do I need to do? Are there any other options other
than paying someone else to do it? I have access to other computers that I
could transfer the hard drive into, but will it work in another computer
other than a iMac?

Thanks, Gayle

In theory yes, but the problem is that, unless you already have file
sharing set up on the iMac, you have no way to do it without a monitor.

It'll definitely work in another Mac.  Ideally, that Mac would be one
that can have two or more internal drives installed.  You could also buy
a FireWire enclosure for the drive and use it as an external.

The simplest way is to connect your iMac to the eMac
using a Firewire cable, then start it in "target mode".
Firewire will transfer files faster than any other method.

Search Apple's web site for instructions, or follow these:

Start the eMac then connect the iMac with a Firewire cable.
Start the iMac whilst holding down the "T" key.

Normally you would see a "T" icon on the iMac after a short
while - but I guess you wont.  Anyhow, hold down the "T" key for
about 30 seconds after starting.  Your iMac drive will now
show up on the desktop of the eMac (it may take a minute or so,
depends on how slow your iMac is).

You can install the drive into another box, but pulling an
iMac apart is no fun.  A Firewire cable is about $5 and will do
the job much quicker.  External Firewire cases cost more than
the drive is likely worth (I'm guessing it's 6 GB?), and you
can't put a second drive in an eMac.

No firewire on the original tray load iMac, I'm afraid Rob, so target disk
mode won't work with this one..

The drive will work fine in other Macs Gayle . On a PC you would need to
have something like MacOpener -
http://www.dataviz.com/products/macopener/index.html  to be able to access
the drive.

You can find instructions on removing / replacing a hard drive at

Gayle, apparenmt failure of the CRT on an early iMac is usually actually
due to the failure of a flyback transformer. This can be repaired reasonably
cheaply by third party repair places.  It is very rare for the much more
expensive CRT itself to die.

Except that the original iMac doesn't have Firewire ports.
