I don't expect an answer here and now. I just want to be steered in the
right direction. There must be a  Microsoft department or division that
can help. Anyway, my immediate problem is that I can't open the
microsoft file I just downloaded. It's Window Media Player 7 for
Macintosh. Everytime I try to open the file, I get that old familiar
and irritating message: "The document that created weddingring.wmv
could not be opened because the application that created it could not
be found".
Here are some of the things I've done:1. Indexed my Hard Drive, 2.
Turned on Virtual memory, 3. Rebuilt the desktop, 4. Tried to get help
from the two addresses shown in the "read me" file that accompanies the
download, but neither one works., 5. Tried opening the file on my
Virtual PC desktop, 6. Set monitor at 256 colors, 6, The Internet
Explorer was installed before the Player

I have an iMac using OS 9.2.2. , Internet Explorer 5.1.7 is installed,
processor: PowerPC G3 400 MHz, memory: 640 MB

Well, that's about it. I don't see anything else mentioned in the "read
me" file. Oh, there is one more thing. When I click on the Windows
Media Player 7 icon, the Player appears on my screen seemingly ready to
perform, but that's about it.

Nik;

I think you need to upgrade your media player. I took my PowerBook in to the
Mac store for other service and while we were there they hooked me up with
the correct version of WMP.

Try this link: http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/954180977/3 . You might
be able to download the correct one.

Hope this helps;

~D.

Hi,

It sounds like your computer does not have the current version of
Windows Media Player installed.

Visit this URL to download the current version:

Thanks, coach Wade and Jim, but I now think there's nothing I can do to
open the .wmv file someone sent me. I believe I have already installed
the latest Windows Media Player FOR OS 9.2.2.  At least I see no other.
I guess that the .wmv files that are now being created require a
version of WMP that only works with OS  10. Thanks again for your
advice.

Nik;

That may be so. Microsoft has a nasty habit of not working overhard to make
their stuff cross-platform compatible.

Sorry this didn¹t work out for you. I hope you find another work-around
somewhere.

Even the latest version available for OSX won't play quite a few things,
nikurashi. It may be worth seeing if the sender can convert the file to a
more universally accessible and less platform dependent format, like
Quicktime.

Cheers

Rod

there are many times i receive .wmv from my windows friends and somehow they
get corrupted between them and me so that the player (ver.7) DOES work, but
about halfway through the "movie," it either comes to a complete stop or the
rest is totally gurbled, especially if there is vocals involved.

i do believe it's a windows problem, not mac...but of course....if ever
there is a problem, it's NEVER on the fault of mac!!!  if only the rest of
america could understand this....but then again, look who they elected to be
prez!!!!!!!!  it's a simple equation....if you're looking for people with
even somewhat of a high mentality and/or i.q., you're looking for
mac-users!!  it's easy to be snobbish when you use a mac...cuz mac is the
BESTEST!
