Coach Wade - 30 Dec 2004 05:10 GMT
Greetings everyone;

I have been trying for some time to get my desktop, running WinXP, and my G4
laptop to network together. Neither one seems to see the other, and I¹m not
sure why.

Here¹s what I¹m trying to do: DSL modem connected to WAN port of Airport
Extreme base station. Printer connected to USB port of AE base station.
WinXP PC connected to LAN port of AE base station.

In a perfect world, everything talks all happy-like, and I can print from
either computer to the printer, and access the DSL modem and internet with
both as well. So far, this world is far from perfect, and the only thing
talking to the AE base station is the laptop.

Any help would be appreciated.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Airport Extreme? Since you mention both a WAN and LAN port, I'm assuming
you mean just a regular Airport BS.

Let's look at a few things first.

The first important thing for both Mac and PC is for them to get IP
addresses and that they be in the same range.

Since your Mac is working then we'll use this as your point of
reference. Open Apple menu --> System Preferences... --> Network -->
your Airport card --> TCP/IP. What IP address do you see?

It will be something like 10.0.1.xxx or 192.168.0.xxx.

Next, look at your Windows machine. Start --> Run --> CMD to open a
command prompt. Type "ipconfig /all" and hit Enter.

Does its IP address begin with the first three numbers as your Mac? If
so, then your connection is working fine and we'll need to look at
something else.

If the IP address begins with 169.254.xxx.xxx then it's not getting an
IP address from the base station. You'll need to use your Mac's base
station administration software to connect to it and make sure that it
has DHCP enabled for the LAN port.

Please post the TCP/IP settings for your Mac and PC if we need to
troubleshoot further.

Hope this helps! bill

Airport Extreme IS a regular base station. I'm guessing you're thinking of
the the Airport EXPRESS, which only has the WAN port.

Hi Bill;

I appreciate the help. Airport Extreme is a full base station version of
Airport Express. As I understand it, the express doesn¹t have a non-wireless
LAN connection (although I could be wrong, since I don¹t have one.) The base
station I have looks like a large white teardrop or Hershey¹s Kiss with the
Apple logo on the front.

I¹m at work at the moment, but I¹ll look into my IP addresses later on when
I get home. Thanks a heap for the advice. I really appreciate it.

You are correct.  The Airport Express only has a WAN Ethernet port (for the
cable or DSL modem), a USB port for a printer, and a sound port.  No LAN
Ethernet port.

Hi everyone,

The Airport Express can broadcast from the ethernet port (in this
example the PC could be used to supply information to transmit to the
wireless channel) but it can't be configured to be an ethernet receiver.

If you want the PC to be on the wireless channel with full two-way
communication you need a wireless ethernet bridge.

Here's a link that describes the product:

>

I just installed one for a friend who wanted to put an ethernet port in
an area that is not accessible to run a cable and it worked like a
charm. It's also great for hooking into wireless networks older
computers that don't have wireless card capabilities but do have
ethernet capabilities.

Hi Jim;

I'm not trying to use an airport EXPRESS at all. I have an airport EXTREME.
This weekend, along with all of the other crap I have scheduled, I'm
planning to sit down and monkey with it in an attempt to figure out the IP
addressing. I'll post the information here after that if I can't get things
to work on my own.

My ultimate goal is to have the DSL modem connected to the network so I can
get online with either computer without changing plugs. Currently I have to
unplug the modem from the desktop and plug in the base station to get my
laptop on the net. I also want to be able to snag my files off the desktop
and gradually start shifting things to my Mac so I can make the inevitable
transition to a complete Mac household easier.

Thanks for your time.

Hi Coach!

My mistake. I was seeing Express even though I was reading Extreme.
Sorry for the confusion.

I believe there is a setting in the base station setup software that
lets you enable DHCP over the LAN port. This may be what you need.

Good luck! bill

I am trying to do the exact same thing, so I'll add myself to this thread if
I may.

As the last person said, using DHCP makes everything automatic.  (assuming
your ISP and modem supports this).

I was able to plug my PC to the airport extreme via ethernet, and my DSL
modem directly into the airport extreme.  My Mac is "connected" though the
wireless connection.  I have been able to get onto the internet using either
or both computers without any problem.

Now.. I have connected my Printer via USB to the airport extreme.  My mac
can see that without any problem and print.  But I don't know how to set up
my PC so that it sees the printer.  I have been trying to run all the Wizards
on setting up home networks to no avail. I have turned off any Firewalls to
make thing simple.

If I try to add a printer, I browse for it and can't find it.  I've tried
adding new system network software but am in the dark.  This is what I see
now when I try to add a printer and Browse for it....

Microsoft Windos Network
MSHOME (the network name I gave it)
PC  (the computer name I gave it)
NetWare or Compatible Network  (this was new.. I somehow installed it)

But no printer.

When I installed the printer drivers, they said to attach the USB printer at
a specific point.  I tried plugging the USB into the Airport, but nothing.
When I pluged in the Printer USB directly into the PC computer I was able to
complete installation.  I have tried deleting that printer connection.  But
no help.

I have yet to try any file sharing between the computers.  Any more ideas?

Have a look at this article on Apple's website and see if it helps

There is an excellent guide to this , and the other issues discussed in this
thread, at http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/index.html

iFelx  also provides a very useful  ³unofficial² update of the list that
Apple used to provide relating to Airport compatible printers, based in part
on a survey that I started on the Apple discussions boards a couple of
months back now see http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1013.html for the list
and
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@372.9IhPagfMMnb.1518710@.6898602a
for the discussion thread.

The Apple discussion boards (available through
http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?14@372.9IhPagfMMnb.1518710@) are a
great source of information about this sort of stuff, by the way, and there
are some seriously good experts in this sort of stuff in the Airport area.

Cheers

Rod
