Hi,
while it's nice to have a "looks the same on all plattforms" - browser,
I'm not working on all plattforms. Now, when I'm using Firebird or
Mozilla to view a page that uses controls like buttons, scrollbars or
dropdown.lists, my eyes hurt from those square, grey things Gecko
renders onto tthe screen. How can I switch to something more Aqua?

You want Camino. It uses Aqua form controls.
XPFE apps (Mozilla and Firebird) will only get Aqua form controls when
XBL Form Controls get turned back on (which will probably never happen,
so never mind).

Too bad. Of course I know Camino. I prefer the looks of it over Firebird
but it lacks the extensions and, yes, the themes (for buttons etc.)
Alas, it seems you cannot have everything.

Try the Firebird 0.8 builds.

I guess that means "wait and see", doesn't it? I even downloaded the
nightly build and it callls itself "0.7+" so it's not quite there yet.
And it looks the same as the 0.7 I have already.

Nope, it does *not* mean "wait and see". The thing that does the trick is the
pinstripe-theme (default for OSX in 0.8), which is avaliable as beta already.
See http://kmgerich.com/pinstripe/beta.html

Pinstripe doesn’t theme HTML form controls, just the application chrome.

Ups, sorry. I messed up with Camino. (Using 3 Gecko-browsers here...)
