Maybe I'm just missing it, but it looks like Panther did away with the
Internet Control panel, for selecting a default webbrowser.  'More
Internet' works OK, but is non-standard.

Help has this to say:
----
Setting your preferred Internet applications

You can choose which application opens when you click an Internet
address link in a document (such as a Mail message), open a Web
Internet Location file in the Finder, or click a properly formatted
email address on a webpage.

For example, you can make Safari your default web browser and Mail
your default email application.

To set Safari and Mail as your default Internet applications:

Open Safari, then choose Safari > Preferences. Click the General icon,
and then choose Safari from the Default Web Browser pop-up menu.

Open Mail, then choose Mail > Preferences. Click the General icon, and
then choose Mail from the Default Email Reader.

Does Mozilla need to be able to set itself via IC?  I'm guessing the
Windows version already has a UI?

I think I saw a RFE big on that... I think it was filled as a Camino bug.

Guess what?  All you need to do to set Mozilla as tyour default browser
is go into Safari>Preferences>General and choose MOZILLA (instead of
Safari) as you default App.
If you use something beisdes Mail as your mail reader, do the same in
Mail's preferences.

Not nice, but that's where Apple moved the IC preferences.

The point is that the only way that a user can discover those prefs now
is to use a competitor to the software he's actually trying to use...

The goal of having similar UI in Mozilla is so that users can just use
it without having to run Safari first.

Greetings,

I only got the last two posts in this thread so this question may have been
asked already:
Isn't the MacOS X fully capable of setting the mail and web default
applications using the "Internet" settings in the System Preferences?
Personally, I think it's stupid that a piece of software could claim being
the default application itself.

You should read the rest of the thread....

Apple, in its infinite wisdom (or more likely its desire that no other
software but Apple's should be used), has seen fit to remove those
settings from System Preferences in 10.3.

Ah, I'm still using Jaguar.

That is the problem.  In 10.3, Apple has done away with the Internet
settings in the System Preferences.  You have to load up Safari to change
the default web browser now.  If you want to change your mail application,
you have to load up Mail and change the default setting there.

Some have said that you could use 10.2's old Internet Pref panel to sey
your default browser under 10.3... something to keep in mind for all
those who are still waiting to upgrade... see macosxhints.com for more
info on that.
