What's the deal with this "hidden" window that shows up when I launch
Mozilla??? I have popups turned off, but it keeps appearing, and I
can't close it.

Until I can turn it off and keep it off, I won't be switching to
Mozilla anytime soon...which is a shame, because 1.6 is the fastest
version of Moz yet.

i think the Mac ( only) hidden window is used by mozilla to provide Mac
style menus

I'm confused.  How can the window be hidden, yet keep appearing?  If
it's actually visible, what does it look like?

One way to see it is to use Expose's "Application Windows" hotkey (or
screen corner). When you do that for Firebird or Thunderbird, a little
square window appears in the group of windows for the app. Firebird's
little mystery window is blank, but Thunderbird's has the text "Get
Mail" and "Write" peeking through. These windows are elusive; clicking
one or otherwise selecting a *bird application window causes all the
other windows to come back, but the hidden one disappears.

It's not evil, or even annoying, just kind of weird. It shouldn't affect
your use of the application, but it does look a little crude.

In Mac OS X 10.3, use Expose to show all windows (I have a hot corner,
so when I move the mouse to the upper right, all windows in all
applications show on the screen at once), and you'll see the "hidden"
window.

As I said in another post, a hidden window I can't close smells too
much like spyware for me to trust Mozilla full-time.

Ah, so then it's a bug?

I agree with the person who posted:

> I would like to know what this hidden window is for.

But this makes no sense whatsoever:

> The hidden window owns the menu bar that displays when no other windows are open.

Why is Mozilla the only browser that does this? A hidden window that I
can't close smells too much like spyware for my taste...

I guess the problem is that Mozilla is a cross-plattform application who
uses its own rendering mechanism to draw the complete window. AFAIK
Mozilla Firebird also have this hidden window, while Camino (who uses
the OS to draw the windows) does not.

That is the great thing about Open Source, you can inspect the source
code yourself to make sure this is not the case. (Obviously you will
want to compile it yourself too, to make sure you are getting the same
code). Alternatively you can use Camino (if you do not need MailNews).
