Why is Mozilla the only browser that does this? A hidden window that I
can't close smells too much like spyware for my taste...

I guess the problem is that Mozilla is a cross-plattform application who
uses its own rendering mechanism to draw the complete window. AFAIK
Mozilla Firebird also have this hidden window, while Camino (who uses
the OS to draw the windows) does not.

That is the great thing about Open Source, you can inspect the source
code yourself to make sure this is not the case. (Obviously you will
want to compile it yourself too, to make sure you are getting the same
code). Alternatively you can use Camino (if you do not need MailNews).
