In addition to having difficulty signing in, Messenger crashes EVERY time I
try to initiate a chat or if someone tries to initiate one with me.

I am running OS 10.4.8 on a PowerBook G4

Hi,

I just fixed this problem I've been having on my Powerbook.

Just search in the finder for 'messenger' and delete all the MSN
messenger items that come up, should be 2 or three folders, and several
"com.messenger.... " files. after you've thrown those away open up
messenger and go through the process of entering your login info into
the program like the first time, and for some reason mine works now...
don't know why. Hope that works for you.
