Hi I am new to msn and would like to know when i set my status as
'Appear Offline'.....do my contacts know when i sign into msn or does
the status 'appear offline' stop that process...i know this sounds a
bit confusing but i dont always want certain people to know that i am
online....but don't wish to block them in total

When Messenger is set to "appear offline", then that's exactly what your
contacts will see. In other words, you will be invisible to them until you
decide to choose a different status, and they will not notice when you sign
in. However, they will notice when you sign in as "available" and then
immediately switch to "appear offline".

Note that you do have the option to sign in with the "Appear offline"
status.  If Messenger begins signing in when you launch it, press Command-.
(period) to stop signing in.  then, go to Network > Sign In, and set your
status to "Appear Offline" before clicking "Sign in".  That way, you'll
appear offline immediately.

Hi,

if you send them a message and their status is set to "online", then yes,
they will be able to see your message, as it should still be on their
computer screen when they get back. As far as I know, it does not simply go
away.

Things get more complicated if your correspondents have set their status to
"appear offline" or "offline"; in that case, you may not even be able to
send them messages, even though the newer versions of Messenger on Windows
allow you to do that.
